8080s: NOX on the radio

Host:

Every seven minutes, emergency services in Germany stand in front of a locked door and are unable to help because they can't get in. Students at Stralsund University of Applied Sciences want to change this and have developed NOX, a smart door lock that lets emergency services in in an emergency. Johannes Mai, you are one of the co-inventors of NOX. What does it look like and how does it work in an emergency?

Johannes Mai:

NOX is a small box that you simply stick on the inside of the door over the normal key and there's a small electric motor inside that turns the key in the normal lock. And the emergency services receive the information that this lock exists via the control center and can then identify themselves using software specially developed for the emergency services and the door is opened for them. NOX fits most common residential locks and security is also guaranteed with the smart lock.

According to the founders, it can't be hacked from the outside. The smart door lock is due to be launched on the market next March.
